Maintaining profitability whilst combating climate change: where will the industry focus resources?

1st October, 2008

The energy sector faces considerable challenges in both the short- and long-term. The rise in retail supply prices, compounded by a soaring commodities market, has precipitated a renewed focus on the consumer. Security of supply remains a critical issue in the gas and electricity markets. Moreover, as climate change looms large on the regulatory agenda, the industry and the government must collaborate in order to ensure a sustainable generation mix. In an environment where the future price of carbon is uncertain and the percentage of electricity generated using renewables needs to increase significantly, the energy sector must determine how and where to focus resources effectively.

Renewables 2008

The IEA & Marketforce's 3rd Annual Conference
20% by 2020: investing in secure generation and transmission in a changing renewables landscape
2nd & 3rd October, 2008

Renewable energy sources are at the forefront of the drive to combat climate change. The European Commission's target of producing 20% of total energy from renewables by 2020 is tough and much needs to be done in order to meet it. Investment in mature and fledgling renewables sources and projects will be critical. Moreover, overcoming planning and grid connection issues will be key to achieving an optimal renewables generation mix. The price of carbon and emissions reduction mechanisms have an impact on the development of the industry as the energy sector decides where best to focus resources. It is, therefore, particularly timely to get together to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
