| Does sustainable construction always cost extra? |
12 March, 2008 |
|
The use of environmental assessments such as BREEAM and CEEQUAL on building and civil engineering projects, if used effectively, can significantly reduce whole life impacts on the environment and society. In addition, recent research and developments which can support the aims of these assessments should be carefully considered.
When undertaking a construction project, design teams may have a number of options available, offering a similar unctionality, but are not necessarily able to identify the most sustainable one. When identifying specifications and design it is important to consider costs, environmental and social benefits associated with these options. By looking at sustainable construction early in the design stage there are better opportunities to reduce, not only environmental impacts, but also the costs of the project. |

| National Sustainable Procurement Conference and Exhibition 2008 |
26 March 2008 |
|
This one-day public sector conference will provide delegates with a unique insight into recent developments and outline the Government’s current sustainability goals and how they can be achieved.
Responsible for an annual procurement spend in excess of £140 billion, the UK public sector market is the largest buyer of goods and services in the country.
It is unsurprising then that public sector procurement practitioners are under increasing pressure to ensure that their procurement makes a positive contribution to the environment, and the recent publication of the Sustainable Procurement National Action Plan has ensured that this issue is high on the agenda for procurement professionals and suppliers working across this sector. |
