Timber Frame is the world’s most popular building technique. It has been used successfully for hundreds of years, unlike brick and block construction which has only been widespread since the 1930’s. According to the Timber Research and Development Association, over 40% of the population of the developed world live in timber frame housing. In Canada and the US, 90% of low-rise buildings use timber technology. The figure in the UK for new build is presently just 10%, however a growing interest in energy efficiency, along with increased Government pressure to comply with stricter building regulations, means timber frame is growing in popularity as a construction method. With an estimated 20% of all new houses in the UK using timber frame by 2006.
